$ 100 M Multi-year Ava DuVernay Inks, Multi-Genre Warner Bros TV Overall Deal

The relationship between Ava DuVernay and the Warner Bros Television Group just got much deeper and richer, literally and figuratively. The Emmy - winning and Oscar - nominated director signed a multi-year and multi-genre deal with the studio in Peter Roth.  The WRT production and development deal for DuVernay and its Forward Movement Shingle covers drama and comedy series, documentaries, digital content, event projects and long - form projects for broadcasting and cable, premium cable, streaming services and other platforms is a big leap for a primary filmmaker known as director. It is the first pact of DuVernay with any studio and will begin in January.  " I had only lovely experiences working with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner and Brett Paul, " said DuVernay, also Queen Sugar and Red Line EP, today.  " In fantastic and nourishing ways, they love and support artists.  They work in a traditional studio led by Kevin Tsujihara with unconventional energy and fresh protocols for deliberate, inclusive imaging.  Warner Bros is an excellent partner in matters of visibility and belonging to all kinds of people and cultures, which is our mission in the Future Movement.  I couldn't be happier to call my production home Warner Bros TV. " " We had the great pleasure of working with her on Queen Sugar and The Red Line, and we are very excited about the new stories she has to tell." While DuVernay is no stranger to the contrary, many might have considered her a more natural fit in Netflix, where her Oscar- appointed 13th documentary was launched.  She also has the newly wrapped four- part Central Park Five drama coming from the streaming service next year and a Prince documentary with exclusive access to the archives of Purple One. " Ava DuVernay is one of the leading lights in our industry, a brilliantly talented author, producer, director and entrepreneur whose ability to inspire her art is only surpassed by her ability to entertain," said Roth, Chairman and Chief Content Officer of the Warner Bros Group.  " We had the great pleasure of working with her on Queen Sugar and The Red Line, and we are very excited about the new stories she has to tell." While DuVernay is no stranger to the contrary, many might have considered her a more natural fit in Netflix, where her Oscar- appointed 13th documentary was launched.  She also has the newly wrapped four- part Central Park Five drama coming from the streaming service next year and a Prince documentary with exclusive access to the archives of Purple One. In an environment where everyone tries to lock up talent, however, it makes sense for DuVernay to move to a traditional studio when Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy go to the streamer.  For one thing, in addition to the range and reach offered by WBTV, one must take into account the relationship between the Selma helmer and the studio through the Warner Horizon Scripted Television-produced Queen Sugar, which was renewed in August for a fourth season at Oprah's OWN, and the CBS event series Red Line, which the executive produces with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter in-house superman.  In addition, unlike a streamer, the WBTV deal offers DuVernay the opportunity to sell its shows to everyone, instead of being locked in one place.  It also does not affect the big - screen ambitions of the indie collective ARRAY founder, which will also see DuVernay directing a big - budget adaptation of the Jack Kirby created The New Gods for Warner Bros Pictures.   New Gods will be the second such film for DuVernay, who was the first colored woman to host a $ 100 million live action movie earlier this year with Disney's A Wrinkle In Time.

(WATCH TRAILER) Halloween‘s First Trailer Recalls The Most Chilling Parts Of The Original Slasher...

The first trailer for the new Halloween is here, and it arrived straight from your darkest nightmares.... The upcoming film ignores all previous incarnations of the franchise except for the original, taking place 40 years after the events of the 1978 Halloween, which ended with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) narrowly escaping the murderous grasp of Michael Myers (Nick Castle) after he finished off her friends, and culminated with Myers ominously running from his own death into the small town of Haddonfield. Both Castle and Curtis reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, scars and all, and both have spent the past 40 years awaiting their rematch. To be honest, it's hard to tell which of the two is going to be the more chilling player: the boogeyman, or the woman who has turned her backyard into target practice while awaiting vengeance. The trailer opens with an explanation of what happened after October 31, 1978. In this new version of events, Myers was caught by police soon after fleeing the crime scene. He has remained in prison since, and Laurie has prayed for his escape every night, "So I can kill him." On this fateful Halloween, her prayers are answered — and the killer promptly returns to his terrorizing ways. In one particularly gruesome moment that seems to set the tone for the slasher flick, Myers drops a fistful of bloody human teeth into a public restroom stall, then attacks the woman using it. As Laurie had always suspected, Myers makes his way back to Haddonfield to finish what he began four decades earlier — but this time, Laurie's more than ready for the fight. Watch the first trailer above. Halloween hits theaters Friday, October 19.

John Wick 3 Has Officially Cast Halle Berry And More

The last we saw our favorite retired hitman and puppy avenger John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 2, he was in a world of trouble, having been declared officially excommunicado from the Continental and dealing with a global contract out on his head. When it releases next year, John Wick: Chapter 3 will pick up after the events of the last film and find Keanu Reeves' character facing countless threats with no sanctuary to turn to. Joining the action franchise this time around is Halle Berry. The Oscar-winning actress took to social media to confirm her role in the film, check it out: I am Sofia ? #johnwick3 @rikerbrothers A post shared by Halle Berry (@halleberry) on May 21, 2018 at 9:29am PDT We had heard that John Wick: Chapter 3 was eyeing Halle Berry for the female lead, but it is nice to finally get that official confirmation from the actress herself. We don't know much at this point other than that her character will be named Sofia and that she reportedly won't be the film's villain, suggesting she could be an ally for John Wick and potentially even a new love interest. Halle Berry is, of course no stranger to the action genre, having starred as a Bond girl in Die Another Day and just last year in the more comic-booky spy film Kingsman: The Golden Circle. But Halle Berry isn't the only talented actor being added to the cast for this next chapter either, as Angelica Huston and Asia Kate Dillon are also joining John Wick 3.

Sylvester Stallone In Line To Take On Mexican Cartel In ‘Rambo 5’

It’s seemingly not over until it’s over for Vietnam vet John Rambo. Sylvester Stallone is set to return for a fifth installment in the Rambo franchise, I understand. There were whispers he may also direct but that doesn’t seem to be the case. While Stallone’s participation hasn’t been confirmed by reps, Avi Lerner’s Millennium is launching sales on the project in Cannes with a tentative shoot date set for September of this year. Stallone is understood to be working on the script and his Expendables collaborator Lerner will produce. In the fifth episode of the franchise, when the daughter of one of his friends is kidnapped, Rambo, who has been working on a ranch, crosses the U.S.-Mexican border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexico’s most violent cartels. The lucrative Rambo franchise launched in 1982 with First Blood and a fifth installment has been mooted for some time, despite the actor previously expressing reservations about a return. Stallone, who starred in and directed the last episode of the series in 2008, is currently working on Creed II. UK trade Screen International first broke the news.

About Netflix’s Central Park Five: The historic case of The Central Park Five will be brought to life in a new dramatic limited series for Netflix created by Ava DuVernay, who will also write and direct. The narrative, five-episode series will be executive produced by Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Films, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh from Tribeca Productions, and DuVernay. “I had an extraordinary experience working with Netflix on 13TH and am overjoyed to continue this exploration of the criminal justice system as a narrative project with Cindy Holland and the team there,” said DuVernay. “The story of the men known as Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades. In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn – from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the President of the United States.” “This is one of the most talked-about cases of our time and Ava’s passionate vision and masterful direction will bring the human stories behind the headlines to life in this series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “After powerfully reframing the public conversation about criminality and injustice in 13TH, Ava now turns a new lens to a case that exposes deep flaws in our criminal justice system.” Participant Media’s Jonathan King added, “It’s an honor to be partnering again with Ava, a uniquely tenacious and inspiring artist. The events of this shocking story continue to resonate today, and the way Ava has chosen to focus intimately on the five young men foregrounds the human costs of this kind of tragedy. We are looking forward to working with Netflix, Tribeca and Harpo on Participant’s first scripted episodic series.” Based on the true story that gripped New York and the world, the series will be a five-episode limited, scripted series that exposes the breakdown of our criminal justice system at every phase of the notorious Central Park Five case. Each part will focus on one of the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — wrongly convicted of raping Trisha Meili in Central Park. The series will span from the spring of 1989, when each were first questioned about the incident, to 2014 when they were exonerated and a settlement was reached with the city of New York. ‘The Equalizer 2’ Trailer: Denzel Washington Returns As Justice-Seeker In Antoine Fuqua Action Thriller

“They killed my friend,” says Denzel Washington as the seeker of justice (or something like it) in this new trailer for Sony’s The Equalizer 2. “So I’m going to kill each and every one of them, and my only disappointment is I only get to do it once.” In the first sequel of Washington’s career, he returns to the role of Robert McCall, described by Sony as a man who “serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?” The upcoming film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is written by Richard Wenk, based on the old television series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The trailer also includes a telling exchange between McCall and his old cohort played by Melissa Leo. “I thought you were retired,” he says, to which she resonds, “Oh, I am, just like you’re dead.”

Black Panther Is Officially a $1 Billion Hit

“Black Panther” can’t stop, won’t stop making money at the box office.... Ryan Coogler’s take on the beloved Marvel character grossed nearly $1.08 billion at the global box office in just four weeks, according to estimates published Sunday by Box Office Mojo. It is Disney’s 16th movie to make $1 billion or more, Deadline reported. Four other Marvel Cinematic Universe releases have hit that mark: “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3″ and “Captain America: Civil War.” But no other Marvel movie has sat atop the box office for four weeks in a row since premiering, according to Box Office Mojo. Domestically, “Black Panther” has grossed $562 million, making it the No. 7 movie of all time in North America when not adjusted for inflation and surpassing “The Dark Knight” to become the second-highest-grossing superhero movie in the United States. While the Wakandan warrior king dominated in the United States, many were eager to see how the movie would fare in some of the biggest global markets. Well, “Black Panther” sat atop of the box office in China and grossed an estimated $22.7 million during its Friday premiere. By Sunday, it had grossed an estimated $66.5 million. And in the process, “Black Panther” bucked any old industry notion that films starring black people are inherent commercial risks in the Asian nation. He added: “It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film.” Here are some other feats accomplished by “Black Panther”: The biggest February release to date, even after adjusting for inflation. The second-highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie at the domestic box office. (“Marvel’s The Avengers” occupies the top spot, with $623 million). Tied with “Jurassic World” as the second-fastest movie to reach $400 million at the domestic box office. Both movies hit that mark in 10 days. Only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” did that faster (in eight days). Made nearly $112 million during its second weekend at the domestic box office, placing it just behind the 2015 Star Wars installment as having the best sophomore weekend ever. The highest-grossing movie with a black director, according to Fandango, even after adjusting for inflation. Has a 97 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, the highest of any comic-book superhero movie. According to Fandango, joins “The Avengers” as the only comic-book superhero movie with a perfect rating on CinemaScore, which polls moviegoers on opening night.
